Diagnose the Xbox 360 Red Ring of Death Fault

There have been many websites throwing around a lot of information about the Xbox Red Ring of Death, and if you’re anything like most of our visitors, you’d have read nearly every ‘tutorial’ out there, with little or no luck!

Follow the steps below to find out exactly what’s causing your Red Ring of Death problem, and whether it’s a console fault or a power supply.

Check your power supply

  1. Turn on your Xbox 360 console
  2. Look at the light on your power supply (on the box)
  3. Take note of the colour of the light (green, red, or unlit)

Check your power supply cables

  1. Carefully unplug the power supply cable from the wall
  2. Unplug the other end of the cable from the power supply unit
  3. Unplug the second cable (connecting the power supply to the console)
  4. Check cable ends for dust and breakages (don’t plug back in if broken)
  5. If cables are clear of dust and breakages, carefully plug them back in (wall outlet cable last)
  6. Ensure cables are secure and safe
  7. Turn your console back on

Test console in another room

  1. Carefully unplug the power supply cable from the wall
  2. Gently move your Xbox 360 console to another room
  3. Try to turn on your console.
  4. If this has solved the problem, you may have a faulty power outlet in the original room

Recheck your power supply

  1. Turn on your Xbox 360 console
  2. Look at the light on your power supply (on the box)
  3. If the color is green, you may have a faulty wall power outlet
  4. If the color is unlit, there must be a problem with your power supply, so please contact Microsoft
  5. If the color is red, try the step below

Cool down your power supply

  1. Turn off your Xbox 360 console
  2. Unplug all of the power supply cables as explained in the steps above
  3. Leave the power supply and Xbox 360 console in a cool, well-ventilated area for 30 minutes
  4. Plug in all of the power supply cables as explained in the steps above
  5. Turn on console
  6. If the color is red, please contact Microsoft
